20 schools in Golden Key privilege cup rugby by LAL GUNESEKERA Twenty schools will vie for honours at the Golden Key Privilege Cup King's All-Island Schools Rugby 7s organised by the Golden Key Credit Card Company Limited in collaboration with the Central Province Schools Rugby Association at Nittawela on April 24 and 25. The Assistant General Manager (Credit Card Division) of Golden Key Credit Card Company Limited, Orville Pereira, said that this was the third year that his establishment have come in to organise a major sports event in Kandy. The first such event was in 2002 where a softball cricket tournament was conducted at the Police grounds and last year (2003), the Central Province Schools Rugby 7s was staged with much success. Pereira said that after last year's event, they decided to have an All-Island 7's coinciding with the centenary of the Kingswood College OBA and that Golden Key were pumping in Rs. 1.5 million for this event. He further said that his Chairman, Kavan Perera, is determined to assist sports in the hill capital and continue with this tournament in the years to come. The 20 schools who will vie for honours are - Kingswood, Trinity, St. Peter's, D. S. Senanayake College, St. Anthony's, Dharmaraja, Isipathana, Wesley, Vidyartha, Maliyadeva, Ananda, Royal, S. Thomas', St. Sylvester's, Rahula (Matara), Thurstan, Nalanda, St. Joseph's, Zahira and Matale Combined. The 20 teams will play in four groups and then vie for the Cup, Plate and Bowl titles, while a women's exhibition game between two girls schools from Kandy too will be played. The draw is on April 16. The winners of the Cup category will receive Rs. 50,000, Plate Rs. 25,000 and Bowl Rs. 15,000, while the winners of the women's game will be awarded Rs. 10,000 and runners-up Rs. 5,000. |
