Murali among 18 recipients of 'Antonian Award of Excellence' by JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr. Sri Lanka's spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan was among the 18 old boys of St. Anthony's College who were awarded the 'Antonian Award of Excellence' in Sports at the 150th Anniversary Celebrations of St. Anthony's College which was held at the College Hall with the Mayor of Kandy Kesara Senanayake as the Chief Guest and the Central Province Minister of Education Velusamy Radhakrishnan as the Guest of Honour. This was the first time in its 150 years that St. Anthony's College had recognised the old boys for having achieved excellence in sports after leaving school. Apart from reaching excellence in their chosen spheres of life, consideration was given for their high integrity and moral conduct and those who could be seen as role models. Priyantha Ekanayake, a legendary ruggerite who has the unique record of having captain Sri Lanka at rugby at four consecutive Rugby Asiads was also bestowed this honour. The others who received this award of excellence in sports are: Ruwan Kalpage (cricket), M. S. Fernando (weight lifting), Ranjith Samarasekera (athletics), Priyantha Ekanayake (rugby), Mahesh Gunatillake (cricket), Bernard Perera (cricket), T. M. Deen (cricket), Leroy Fonseka (rugby), Jude Pillai (rugby), Lakshman V. Ekanayake (rugby), Stephen Joseph (athletics), Piyal Wijetunga (cricket), A. C. M. Lafir (cricket), Udaya Weerakoon (badminton), R. N. A. de Silva (badminton), Marlon Von Haght (cricket), Umesh de Alwis (table tennis) and Muttiah Muralitharan (cricket). |
