Jet Airways on international skies

By Chanuka Mannapperuma

India's private domestic airline Jet Airways marked its foray into the international skies on March 23 by linking Colombo in Sri Lanka with Chennai in India.

Jet Airways has also announced several inaugural fares to enhance traffic from various points in India to Sri Lanka. The CEO of Jet Airways, Wolfgang Prock Schauer, said this linking of Colombo with Chennai was consequent to the historic initiative taken by the Prime Ministers of Sri Lanka and India, to promote trade and movement of peoples between the two countries.

Jet Airways had been allowed to operate 28 flights per week to Sri Lanka, he added. Phase two of the operation would include direct flights to SAARC countries, Bangalore,Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram in the near future. The airline combined with its General Sales Agent in Sri Lanka, John Keells, and Walkers Tours would also promote special travel packages, the CEO said. The airline at present flew nearly 17 million people annually and, with the Sri Lanka operation, the numbers were expected to increase in the future, he said.

The one- way Economy class fare on the Chennai-Colombo sector would be Indian Rupees(INR) 4,145 and club premiere (business class) INR 6,615.Passengers could also avail of the normal return fares of INR 8,285 in the economy class and INR 13,220 in club premiere.

Jet Airways was currently operating a fleet of 42 aircraft to 40 destinations in the country and carried 42.1 million people since its inauguration in 1993. Being the largest private domestic airline in india, it touched down in Colombo last Monday.

Today Jet Airways operates over 255 flights daily to 41 destinations across the country. Jet Airways was set up in 1993,with the objective of becoming the most preferred domestic airline in the country by providing high quality reliable air travel in India.
