Foreign university degrees for a song here Education has taken a leap in Sri Lanka with the availability of foreign university Degrees in the country at less than half the cost or even less. The Australian College of Business Studies and Technology (ACBT) is second to none in terms of quality university education on Business and Information Technology providing the much needed avenues for higher education to undergraduates in an ideal environment. Academic excellence is their main aim and, towards this end, quality lecturers who are fully qualified and experienced conduct the courses. Alan Robertson, Principal of ACBT, was of the opinion that the standard of English was very high in Sri Lanka and he found local students very adept at following lectures which were conducted in English. He said some of the undergraduates were even better than the Australians in the command of the English language. Talking of course content and lectures, Robertson, said everything was planned out in Australian universities and lectures were conducted here according to Australian specifications. Lecturers were Sri Lankans but foreign lecturers came in as and when there was a requirement. In Sri Lanka, ACBT conducted a threesemester term. The Degree took a shorter time to complete than in Australia. All assignments and examinations were couriered to Australia and then results were made known subsequently to students. ACBT was bridging a much needed gap from the Advanced level or Ordinary Level to University as the case maybe. ACBT began in Sri Lanka in March 1998. It is a member of a network of Institutes of Business and Technology that originated in Perth ten years ago at the Perth Institute of Business and Technology (PIBT). There are five institutes in other capital cities in Australia and in Indonesia, Kenya and England. Each is attached to a reputable and internationally recognised university. ACBT is a member of this group and like PIBT, is associated with Edith Cowan University Perth, Western Australia. It is to this university that many Sri Lankans enter to complete their Degrees. In July this year ACBT would go one step ahead by introducing Post Graduate courses for the MBA and Master of Information Technology because of the big demand for such courses. Many had followed foreign Degrees and were back in Sri Lanka for employment but needed to improve their employment avenues and further their degrees. The Masters in Information Technology could be followed by anyone who had a basic degree from any university. ACBT is gearing itself towards making available the postgraduate courses which will once again be conducted in a supportive environment with fully qualified lecturers with overseas exposure so that they would have an international approach. ACBT is located at Trans Asia Hotel, Sir Chittampalam A. Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo. |
