Automated cargo clearance now on The first phase of the electronic submission of Customs Declaration process got underway early last week with successful transactions made by the country's premier freight forwarding company ACE Cargo, where several BOI import sea cargo entries were processed electronically through the Sri Lanka Automated Cargo Clearance System. This is a ground breaking event where Colombo will be one of the first ports in the South Asian region to implement this high tech ecommerce gateway thus paving the way towards making the Port of Colombo the hub of Asia for trade and commerce. The objective of automating clearing and forwarding process is to improve operational efficiencies in entry passing, port handling and cargo movement thereby reducing the time and replacing the cumbersome manual process. Over the past few weeks eServices have been conducting several live submissions of CUSDECS electronically on behalf of a number of non BOI and BOI enterprises through the Sri Lanka Customs and BOI(Colombo zone) respectively to iron out possible hiccups and improve upon the process towards streamlining the end to end electronic clearance. A number of companies who are registered with Sri Lanka Customs and have a valid Customs House Agent License (CHA) have already pre registered for the official launch which is due to take place shortly. According to industry sources development in this field is a long felt need and has been in the pipeline for quite some time. It is time that we get on par with other regional hubs in this electronic environment if we are to survive and compete with our neighbours, said a spokesman. The key players of this project are Sri Lanka Customs, the BOI and the service provider eServices Lanka which is a joint venture partnership between the government and the private sector. |
