by Chanuka Mannapperuma

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) has appointed the Academy of Business Studies (ABS), to conduct its Investment Advisor Certificate programme to create an awareness among the public on investment opportunities.

CSE Chairman, Eraj Wijesinghe, said that since the Colombo Stock Market was growing rapidly, it was time to create an awareness among the public and educate them.

He said training programmes should be expanded by educating about the Colombo Stock Exchange.

CSE Director General, Hiran Mendis, said the main objective of its programme was to create an awareness among the public on investment and the CSE hoped to do so from grassroots level by employing CSE educators from the Sarasavi Saviya programme."With all this, we will move towards setting up our new branches in Jaffna and Kurunegala within this year."

Explaining about the course, he said; "It gives an entry point qualification which would enable one to seek employment within the industry of stock broking.

Investment advisors of stockbroker companies will advise clients on the prevailing situation in the capital market and the best moves or options open to them." he added.

CEO of ABS, Faris Ismail, said that this was a good opportunity for young people to get into the field of stock broking.

ABS enrols 12,000 students per year. According to Ismail, this Investment Advisor Certificate course will be strengthened with review sessions, continuous assessments, computer based training, mock exams, group discussions and a specially designed study text as well as a highly experienced panel of expert lecturers drawn from the industry.

This course will be held on Saturdays and will conclude with the final exam in September. It will comprise 2 modules with a duration of 11 weeks.

The second module will focus on subjects such as Ratio Analysis, Valuation of Shares, Debt Securities, Portfolio Management as well as Marketing Securities to Clients and Ethical Considerations.
