ACCA publishes sustainability reporting guidelines

The President ACCA Sri Lanka Ajith Tudawe, handed over the first copy of "Sustainability Reporting An Introduction for Organisations in Sri Lanka" to the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resource Thosapala Hewage.

This is the first time a guideline of this nature was published in Sri Lanka on Sustainability Reporting covering both areas of Environmental and Social Reporting.

This guide line is issued under the endorsement of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. Minister Rukman Senanayake in his foreword of this publication stated that "By combining a comprehensive overview with examples of best practice, this guideline would indeed push forward the development and standards of environmental and sustainability reporting in Sri Lanka".

ACCA Sri Lanka in November 2003 launched the first Environmental Social and Sustainability Reporting awards in Sri Lanka. The first awards cycle will commence in November 2004 with the first wards ceremony taking place in early 2005. This award scheme is supported and endorsed by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the World Bank - Colombo and the Sri Lanka Standards Institution.

ACCA's endeavour for greater transparency is not limited to awards. Since 1990 they have been involved in promoting greater transparency in many ways.

First ACCA work closely with a number of relevant organizations, secondly they publish a wide range of technical and research reports and thirdly an e-newsletter, covering sustainability issues. Furthermore, ACCA has formed the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) a multi stakeholder international group whose mission is to develop global sustainability reporting guidelines. These guidelines provide a universal framework for reporting sustainability issues.

As part of ACCA's goal to educate the corporate sector of Sri Lanka, ACCA has organized a special workshop on "Environmental, Social and Sustainability Reporting - Its importance" as a part of their centenary celebrations scheduled for the 26th of April this year. Rachel Jackson, Head of ACCA Social and Environmental Issues, will be arriving in Sri Lanka especially to conduct this workshop.
