HSBC launch mentoring programme for UOC undergrads

HSBC recently launched a Mentoring Programme for second year undergraduates from the Faculty of Management and Finance at the University of Colombo (UOC).

The key aim of this programme was to give these young adults the opportunity to experience and be a part of a dynamic business environment. The first group of undergraduates spent two days visiting the various departments and acquiring a hands-on and more in-depth understanding of the roles and function of the Bank.

HSBC's Mentoring Programme will be conducted every month until October this year and will give more than 70 undergraduates the chance of being part of such a unique venture. Mr Mark Humble, CEO of HSBC commenting on the project said, "Helping people to gain the skills and knowledge to succeed is our number one commitment around the world. We are pleased to give these students such an opportunity and look forward to welcoming the numerous other batches of students to follow."

Tharaka, a Management student enthused about the project and said," This really was an enriching experience. I learnt quite a lot and was able to sharpen my knowledge on a series of business practices." Suresh, another Management student added, "My studies are often theoretical in nature and we don't have the opportunity to understand and be a part of the practical aspect of matters. These two days at HSBC have been very exciting and I have learnt a great deal about the day-to-day working in a business environment."

The group of students were hosted to breakfast by Mr Sarath Piyaratna, Deputy CEO of HSBC. This was followed by a short orientation that entailed an introduction to HSBC Sri Lanka and the HSBC Group. The undergraduates were then paired off with staff and were able to gain practical first hand experience by working at different departments and branches at HSBC. Mr Mark Humble, CEO of HSBC, hosted the undergraduates to tea on the final day where they had the opportunity to meet with some senior members of staff. The students expressed their delight at being so warmly welcomed to the Bank and in being given such an experience.

The Mentoring Programme is an integral aspect of the Employable You Project implemented by HSBC together with AIESEC and the Career Guidance Unit of the UoC.
