Hotel Silver Falls - the newest star in 'Little England'

Text & Pictures by BEVERLEY JANSZ

In the scenic surroundings of mountain terrain and wild nature accentuated by the beautiful 'Blackpool' waterfall, Hotel Silver Falls cannot shine more silver on the 60-acre stretch of lush tea land that it sits on, in 'Little England'.

Built at Windy Corner, Blackpool, the newest 'star' to enter Nuwara Eliya Hotel Silver Falls.

The beauty of the surroundings are enhanced by the most friendly service of the staff, headed by its youthful Director/General Manager Niluka Wickrematilleke and AGM M. S. Cassim. The splendour of the Blackpool waterfall by the valleys and meadows enhances the hotel's natural beauty.

At 6,200 feet above sea level with the temperature ranging from 12C to 22C, the hotel offers 27 deluxe rooms with star class facilities, including Satellite TV, telephone, IDD facilities, hot/cold water, piped music, heaters and room service. Hotel Silver Falls is a marvellous piece of architecture created by Chairman/Managing Director, Shantha Wickrematilleke, a pioneer Gem exporter turned hotelier.

The hotel's gleaming teak furnitured bar has been named after the megalithic English ruin 'Stonehenge' in Salisbury Plain, Amesbury. The 'Cozies' restaurant which could accommodate over 150 guests, offers the best in cuisine - Western, Eastern, Chinese and spicy Sri Lankan specialities, prepared by Executive Chef/Operations Manager, M. M. Cassim. The menu at the hotel is made up from fresh vegetables grown in the compound of the hotel.

A special feature at the 'Stonehenge' is that when serving a champagne it is accompanied by a strawberry grown in the compound of the hotel Restaurant and Bar Manager, Tony Saldin said.

Within a short period of its opening, Hotel Silver Falls has become a popular honeymooners' paradise and a 'Talk of the Town.'

Honeymoon couples are offered a complimentary room every five years to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Sunday Brunch specially for planters and their families is also popular. While sipping beer at the 'Beer Garden' with a BBQ corner, guests get a panoramic view of the beautiful mountains that surround the hotel.

Special discounted packages are offered to Sri Lankans and expatriates, Assistant General Manager, M. S. Cassim said. Hotel Silver Falls is owned and managed by W. J. Wickrematilleke, pioneer in the Gem and Jewellery export industry. Its directors are Shantha Wickrematilleke (Chairman/Managing Director), Ms. Poornima Wickrematilleke (Director), Niluka Wickrematilleke (Director/General Manager) and Ms. Ranmali Amarasena (Director).
