Hair flair

by Umangi de Mel

Once again talking 'Men' and men only, the subject gives rise to discussions on rare topics that need more exposure.

Facial hair, hides what needs to be hidden highlights what needs to be emphasised and goes out to make a fashion statement. Moustaches have entered the scene while beards seem to have faded a little from fashionable prominence.

The foliated figures seem to hold their heads high since they consider the noble chin hedges as a mark of individuality. Grooming a beard or a moustache could be a coping - mechanism from those perceived lack of 'good looks' and other definitions of style.

A beard they say, is an unmistakable symbol of wisdom and authority.

And most of all it's the era when you catch the bold with their 'baldy' looks and facial hair groomed in the latest design.

"Shaving and having a crew cut is almost in vogue now. Shaving the head is a fashion, it's also become like a coverup, especially if one is going bald," says Yohan Peiris, hair dresser talking about the latest guy fashions.

He says shaving facial hair could be a real bother and some guys actually wouldn't take the trouble, "It all depends. For some it's a lot of work, but I feel that one should bother and take a little trouble to shave on a regular basis. The rugged, unshaven look can also be a tread where they have the stubble," Yohan says nevertheless, most of the guys spend a lot of time to have the in looks of the season.

"They work on keeping a point or creating lines on the face - with their facial hair.

There are guys who go to such extends to look good. It's a mixture where you get different tastes."

According to him, the 'point' is very trendy, "They've even got thin lines shaved across the face. The French moustache which is just a line looks totally cool. But I'd say that it's all personal preferences which wouldn't suit anybody and everybody," he points out.

The goatee seems to be very much in vogue and it attracts a lot of attention. Plus it's been around for a while now.

Focusing on totally shaved heads, Yohan says that shaving heads have become a fashion in the recent past, "Having long hair is not a trend. It's very natural but you hardly find people who take time to grow his hair. It's been around but the number of people who have long hair have been reduced."

He says that having a totally shaven head and a face full of hair is out. "That sort of look is never a fashion. You could have a shaven head with a nice cropped beard, or a designed moustache. And most of the guys who shave their heads, do it themselves. It's safe as long as you have a trimmer or a clipper. It actually saves a lot of time. It's trendy and lucky that it's become a fashion," he comments.

Speaking about the latest hair trends, Yohan says that all the designs that you do on the face look good on guys.

"It actually gives you a feeling that somebody takes more trouble to look good. If it suits the person, I think it's cool."

Talking about all that trimming, shaping and grooming, a few guys share their views on shaving.

25-year-old Ushan says taking a regular shave is awful.

"It takes 15/20 minutes to groom myself. Most of the days, I simply don't have time to do it, I just go to office looking a bit odd. Shaving on a regular basis is almost impossible, with the work-load I have.

But of course, I groom myself properly when I go to see my girl-friend," he feels that shaving heads is totally ridiculous. "It seems downright hideous. It's very appalling. Hair works as a cover which protects the skull. I think you should leave it like that. But having a designed moustache or a beard is cool."

25-year-old Anushka says that shaving regularly is a hassle. It takes up a lot of time. Thing is if you're doing it, you should do it properly stopping it half-way is totally absurd plus if you rush it, then you end up with a lot of cuts and scars on the face. I'd shave once every other day." He says shaving the head could be done but only if it suits. "If it suits you, by all means, you should do it but if it doesn't then it'll be the worst decision you make in life.

25-year-old Mikshan says that he can't be bothered to take a regular shave since he has no time at all, "I'm kinda lazy to shave plus it takes up a lot of time. Actually I prefer the rugged sort of look to a clean-shaven one."

He says he just loves to have a hair-free head, "It's all about convenience, I prefer having to shave my head to shaving facial hair, that way, I can take a bath even in the night.

I'm not bothered about what's in vogue but the 'baldy' look sure gives me a good kick," he adds that he hates the designs that you do with facial hair, "Either you shave it totally or leave it the way it is."
