Fowzie stops elephant donations

by Kandy South Corr.

The practice of donating elephants from the Pinnawala orphanage during the UNF regime has been stopped with immediate effect by Environmental and Natural Resources Minister A.H.M. Fowzie on a complaint made by Deputy Transport Minister Mahipala Herath.

Ten baby elephants have already been donated with another 10 tuskers destined as gifts still awaiting clearance. These elephants were gifted on an initiative by the former Environment Minister Rukman Senanayake and Kegalle district MP Champika Premadasa.

Several kith and kin of UNF members were to be the recipients. Meanwhile, an official of the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage said the number of foreign and local visitors to the orphanage have come down drastically due to the dwindling number of elephants.
