Normalcy in the East by ANTON NONIS Army and Police, closely monitoring the situation in the Eastern range, said there was normalcy in the area after the Karuna faction was disbanded last week. Eastern Range Deputy Inspector General of Police, Neville Wijesinghe said that cadres of Karuna, who went underground during the attack by the Vanni cadres, have started to emerge and join the new commander, Ramesh. The whereabouts of the defeated Karuna are still a mystery to the police, DIG Wijesinghe said. Rumours that Karuna had slipped into Colombo or left the shores of Sri Lanka are not confirmed. Col Sumedha Perera said the Army is conducting joint operations with the Police to ensure that peace prevails in the East. The cadres of any of the factions are not allowed to roam about with their uniforms or weapons. DIG Wijesinghe said the police had not infiltrated the uncleared areas in the East. Up to now, the police had not detected any cadres who had come to the government controlled areas either, carrying any weapons. Special Task Force commander, Nimal Lewke said the STF does separate patrolling in the area. |
