Anju Jain (90) - Indian lasses sink Lankans

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

India recorded a comprehensive 123-run win over Sri Lanka in their inaugural Women's Singer Tri-Nation Asia Cup limited overs tournament match played at the SSC grounds yesterday.

India, electing to bat first rattled up a healthy 217 for 4 in their stipulated 45 overs and the host team was at sea against a well knit Indian bowling attack folding up for a disappointing 94 in their allotted 45 overs.

For India, opener Anju Jain provided the backbone in their batting, striking 90 runs off 115 balls. She was also involved in a productive opening stand with Jaya Sharma (27) putting on 47 for the first wicket. Anju Jain added a further 97 runs for the second wicket with Chopra and 57 for the third wicket with Mithali Raj (35 n.o). The Indian wicket-keeper batswoman Jain cut, drove and pulled in style in her 90 which was studded with 14 hits to the ropes.

The Indian batswomen displayed plenty of resolve against a lack lustre Sri Lankan bowling attack which was simply inadequate to pose any problems to the Indians who batted with a professional flavour. For Sri Lanka, only seasoned left-hander Hiruka Fernando batted with some distinction to collect a well compiled 35 with two fours to keep the scoreboard moving for the host team when runs seemed hard to come.

India is scheduled to meet Pakistan in the second game tomorrow (Monday) also at the SSC grounds.

The tournament is being worked out on a round robin basis with India having collected 2 points from their win.

However, tournament organisers said that there was a question mark as to Pakistan's participation in which event Sri Lanka and India would meet in a best of seven matches to decide the champions.
