Sandaruwan steals the limelight with two wins

Bernard Perera, reporting from Diyatalawa

Nineteen-year-old schoolboy from Battaramulla Gayan Sandaruwan stole the limelight at the 12th annual Fox Hill Super Cross at Diyatalawa yesterday.

He outclassed all experienced riders in his 125 cc bike to win two events and was placed in two more events.

Gayan was trailing behind S. Rehman from India and Sri Lanka's No. 1 rider Ananda Wedisinghe from the commencement of the 125 cc class race. Chasing these riders Gayan got past Ananda in the third lap and kept on moving very intelligently on the straights with superb cornering to get past the Indian rider at the post with the massive local crowd behind him.

In the same class again he was in the same position, but managed to win again from the leaders with his dare devil riding which really thrilled the crowd.

Meanwhile, in the super cars event it was the defending SLARDAR champion, Aravinda Premadasa who took the honours on this day winning both events. Aravinda and Gayan were declared as Fox Hill champs for the year 2004.

Rameez Mahamoor drove his Suzuki Cultus in great style to clinch the Group A cars 1050-1400 cc class event.

With this win yesterday, Mahamoor became the only driver to clinch this event for, fifth successive year, which is a new record in the Fox Hill history. Other drivers to perform well yesterday were Rizvi Farook, Rohan de Silva, Bandula Seneviratne, Nishan Wasalathanthri, Ishraz Wahab, U. Serasinghe and Dinesh Jayawardene driving in different classes. Ravi Mayadunne drove his Toyota Land Cruiser to victory in the T & J category.

Team Caltex was the most successful team here with four victories with many drivers being placed among the top ranks.

The experienced Indian rider was able to win the 250 cc open event pushing back Ananda and Gayan to second and third positions.
