Army-Navy to kick off rugby season

Army, who finished in fourth position in last year's Caltex 'A' Division Inter-Club League Championships of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU), open the 2004 season against the Navy on friday at Galle Face. Navy were seventh last year.

Two games are down for decision on Saturday (April 24) with Kandy Youth SC hosting CH & FC at Nittawela, while the Havelocks take on Police at Havelock Park. Last year, Kandy Youth lost all games in the first round and were in the Plate category, while CH were the runners-up losing only to the ultimate champions Kandy Sports Club (13-35) in the first round, but winning the second round game (36-22) at Maitland Crescent. Havies ended up in fifth place with Police in sixth position.

Then on Sunday (April 25), Air Force, who were eighth in the League last season, takes on CR & FC who were third at Katunayake, while defending champions Kandy Sports Club led by Radhika Hettiaratchi hosts Old Zahirians at Nittawela. OZSC won only against Kandy Youth (27-20) in the first-round last year and figured in the Plate category.

The first round games will be worked off from April 23 to July 4 while the second round is from July 9 to August 8.

The Caltex Clifford Cup Knock-Out Championships is to be staged at Longden Place from August 13 to 22. Last year, Kandy Sports Club won the tournament beating CH & FC 30-22 in the final. In the "semis" Kandy beat Havelocks 37-26 while CH beat CR 37-21.

There will be "live" telecasts of every Caltex League game on Saturdays.

The traditional game between CR & FC and Havelocks in the first round is scheduled for May 15 at Longden Place, while Kandy Sports Club's three important fixtures against Havelocks is on May 30 at Nittawela against CR & FC on May 12 also at Nittawela and versus CH & FC on July 3 at Maitland Crescent while the game with Army is on June 5 at Galle Face.

The final game of the first-round is on July 4 between Kandy Youth and CR & FC at Nittawela. (L.G.)
