Chilaw Rest House : 

100-year old dutch building now a star resort

Standing on a beautifully landscaped garden, and overlooking the beautiful Chilaw beach, is the 100-year old Dutch Colonial building, now the Chilaw Resthouse.

Following the footsteps of his father, a leading hotelier, the late John Marasinghe, B.M. Sarath Marasinghe took up to the hospitality industry 25 years ago and became a leading hotelier. Marasinghe took over the Chilaw Resthouse in 1989 on a long term lease. Since then, the resthouse has turned a new lease of life and now stands as a modern rest house, offering the discerning traveller all facilities for a perfect holiday.

The resthouse offers 16 guest rooms including four rooms which are air-conditioned. It has two banquet falls, one of which is air conditioned which could accommodate over 300 guests. The banquet halls have become popular for large scale weddings, in-house seminars, conference and other banquet functions.

The Resthouse stands on a beautifully landscaped garden overlooking the beautiful Chilaw beach, and is popular for outdoor functions, and BBQ nights.It has become a popular stopover for tourists visiting Wilpattu, the Talawila shrine and Panduwas Nuwara. In close proximity to the rest house are a host of tourist attractions, including the Madampe Thani Wella Devale, Anavilundawa Birds Island, the famous Deduru Oya, Prawn farms etc. The resthouse arranges tours to these places of tourist interest.

Special offers are being made to Sri lankans and expatriates. The Chilaw Resthouse has become very popular for its seafood cuisine.

The seafood menu is made up of the famous Chilaw crabs and prawns, lagoon crabs and prawns. Guests are offered the 'Catch of the Day' from the Chilaw beach. The restaurant also offers Western, Eastern, Chinese and traditional spicy Sri Lankan rice and curry. In addition to the chilaw Resthouse, Marasinghe also runs the Nawalapitiya Resthouse, Rajapihilla Resthouse and Ranthaliya Resthouse which overlooks the famous Ranthaliya lake in Kurunegala. Marasinghe is the Secretary of the Urban Development Authority Resthouse Managers' Association.

Sigiriya Rest House with a new look

The Sigiriya Rest House owned and managed by the Ceylon Hotels Corporation (CHC) has been given a facelift. Began as an English Governor's Circuit bungalow, it now boasts as the closest hotel to the historic ancient rock, offering guests a panoramic view of a world heritage from the lobby and guest rooms of the Rest House.

Manager Sigiriya Rest House, Chaminda Wajirakumar said that out of the present 16 guest rooms, eight rooms have been up-graded to luxury rooms adding all modern facilities, including TV, mini-bar, hot/cold water and room service. Senior Manager, Marketing/Travel, Ceylon Hotels Corporation, Ranjith Balasuriya said that with the complete refurbishment, his marketing team is all out to popularise the Sigiriya Rest House not only among foreign guests but Sri Lankans alike, as the most popular stop-over for tourists visiting the Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
