LTTE awaits call to resume peace talks by S. Selvakumar The LTTE political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan, positively responding towards resuming the stalled peace process, said that they were awaiting the official request from the Norwegian facilitators with regard to future talks. "We are aware that President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has contacted Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik, but we are yet to be officially informed by the Norwegians", Thamilselvan added. President Kumaratunga, who pledged to the nation that she would resume negotiations soon after the UPFA government is formed, contacted the Norwegian Prime Minister on Wednesday about the Government's willingness to resume peace negotiations. The Norwegian Premier had assured her that his government could play the role of facilitator and would contact the LTTE on behalf of the Sri Lankan government. The Norwegian envoy in Colombo Hans Brattskar was not available for comment. Thamilselvan further told the Sunday Observer that future peace talks would be based on the Interim Self Governing Authority proposals they had submitted to the former UNF government last October. "The people of the North and East overwhelmingly voted for the Federal Party in the firm belief that the Self Governing Authority would be established for the region and it was the mandate the LTTE got. Therefore, our talks would be based on this", he added. He also said it is too early to delve into other matters connected with the intended peace talks, but said that the LTTE is eagerly awaiting the official call. |
