Random police checks in Colombo by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE Police have decided to carry out random checks of vehicles and people getting about in the Colombo City in light of several shooting incidents which took place in recent weeks, police said. Three shooting incidents occurred in Maligawatte, Wellawatte and Grandpas areas; the police suspect they were between two rival factions loyal to the LTTE and Karuna groups. Director, Colombo Crimes Division, SSP Sarath Lugoda said they are investigating an incident near the Sambodhi Vihara at Maligawatte where a woman who sustained gun shot injuries escaped. Her whereabouts are still not known to the police. A man was killed and another wounded in this incident. The injured man was later admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. "We are interrogating this person after he was discharged from hospital," he said. At Kotahena, a Tamil politician was shot and injured while another was shot and injured at Chapel Lane, Wellawatte. A senior police officer, commenting on large-scale arms being smuggled from the Eastern Province into Colombo, said this story was based more on speculation than truth. He said it was unlikely the police would set up road barriers as done in the past. |
