All Saints' Borella prepare for Centenary Celebrations with wins in u. 19 and 15 netball tourneys

by A. C. DE SILVA

One hundred years is a milestone that anyone yearns to reach in a lifetime and All Saints' College, Borella will reach that prestigious goal in November 2004. Being a landmark that calls for celebrations, the school ably supported by a band of staunch old girls with the Principal Rev. Sr. Preethie leading the way have lined up several events to mark the historic occasion.

"I was surprised to see my old school doing so well and producing talented all allround students and with the help of a handful of past pupils several events have already being held," said Riphilla Ramlan who conducted the Centenary Netball Tournament for the school. Celebrations started off with Holy Mass being celebrated by His Grace the Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo in October last year. The Centenary Walk was conducted in November. Then the netball tournament was conducted in March this year. Then of the events to come, a musical fiesta is being organised with a 100 voices choir on July 18 and the Centenary Dance will be held on September 18 at Galadari Hotel.

The Centenary Netball Tournament for the All Saints' Sister Schools took a prominent place with 13 teams from five sister schools of All Saints' College playing at Campbell Park

It was not just a tournament, but a tournament quite fitting for the occasion as pomp and pageantry made the tourney an event to remember. The Chief Guest was Rev. Sr. Lidwina - a former Principal of All Saints' while the Guest of Honour was Rev. Sr. Sumithra - Provincial Superior and Rev. Sr. Preethie - the Principal of All Saints' College co-ordinated the proceedings.

The National, School and Centenary Flags were hoisted and then the match ball was handed over by chief guest Rev. Sr. Lindwina to the captain of All Saints' under 19 team - Mellissa Ferdinandsz. Victory smiled on All Saints' in the opening match of the tourney where the school's under 19 team beat St. Anthony's, Kollupitiya by 13 goals to nil.

The schools that participated in the tourney were: Holy Cross College, Gampaha, St. Paul's, Waragoda, St. Anthony's, Kollupitiya and Dematagoda and the tourney was played three age groups - under 15, 17 and 19.

All Saints' College, Borella and Holy Cross College, Gampaha were unbeaten in group matches and it was nothing but right that these two teams should meet in the final. And what a final it was!

All Saints' edged out Holy Cross by just one goal to carry away the centenary Trophy, the scorers being 17 goals to 16, after Holy Cross led at half-time 9 goals to 7.

However, Holy Cross was not to be kept away and they turned tables on the hosts All Saints' in the under 17 final by a big margin of 13 goals to 3. Defeat in the under 17 final was not going to Dampen the spirits of the All Saints' girls as their younger sisters - the under 15 team put up a fine show to beat Holy Cross in the final by 13 goals to 9 in a well contested game.

The All Saints' teams were coached by Mrs. Evamgaline Karunaratne.

Special Awards: Best Player - under 15: Natasha Kulasekera of All Saints'. Under 17: Mahashika Sabashini of Holy Cross and Under 19: Nadeesha Cooray of All Saints.

His Grace, Rt. Rev. (Dr.) Marius Peiris, the Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo was the Chief Guest at the finals.
