Silva kicks Army to 9/8 win over Police

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

T. A. Silva kicked Army SC to a 9 points to 8 win over Police SC in their Caltex League rugger encounter at Army Grounds, Galle Face yesterday. Army's points came when fullback Perera fired over three penalties while Police scored an unconverted try through Nilusha Fernando and a penalty put over by Harshana Wijeweera. Army led 6-5 at the breather.

In a scrappy game played under a thick drizzle, both sides found ball-handling difficult and dropped the ball at vital stages. But the three missed penalties by Police saw them pay dearly and that caused their defeat. Police's Figian Lueke Rogoyana missed as many as four easy scoring opportunities when he missed a conversion and three penalties within kicking range.

He should have compensated for his earlier mishaps, but luck deprived him of doing so when the scores were 9-8 in favour of the Army in the last minute of the game. At this stage, a penalty was awarded but Rogoyana's kick hit the upright and bounced back into play. Then the final whistle was blown by referee Anil Jayasinghe.
