Kandy Municipal road and cycle races today by UPANANDA JAYASUNDERA - Kandy Sports Special Corr Kandy Municipal Playgrounds Department is organising a road race and a cycle race today, the 2nd of May and the commencement of the cycle race is at 7.00 a.m. and the road race at 7.30 a.m. The starting point of the cycle race will be the Gatembe Playground and reaching upto Kandy and at the Katugastota Junction via Wattegama road upto Elwela junction and returning through Alawatugoda road to end at Gatembe playground. The mileage of the cycle race will be 35 miles. The distance of the road race will be twelve miles. The starting point of the road race will be the Gatembe Playground and proceeding upto Katugastota through Yatinuwara Veediya and at Katugastota it will turn to Dodanwala Road near the St. Anthony's Convent and pass the Citadel Hotel and Janaki Hotel will end up at Gatembe Playground. In addition to these events, there are Avurudu Kreeda at the Gatembe Playground from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Organising Committee stated that the Avurudhu Ulela was delayed due the exposition of the Tooth Relic at the Dalada Maligawa for the last two weeks. The sponsors are Finance and Human Rights Foundation of Kandy. The Chief Guest will be Kesara Senanayake, the Mayor of Kandy and among the Guests of Honour are Ms L. B. Aluvihare, Deputy Mayor, Sena Dissanayake, Leader of the Opposition, T. Wickremasinghe, Municipal Commissioner, Nimal Mediwake, DIG, Ilahi Abdeen, MMC and Chairman of the Sports Committee, Sarath Wijesinghe MMC. |
