Fitness Kingdom at HNB Towers The information technology era is bringing with it many fundamental changes in the way we think about health and fitness. The earlier model, in which the professional did everything and, the client or the patient nothing, will no longer exist. Health and Fitness power is moving out of our doctors' offices, clinics, and hospitals. It is moving into our homes, our schools and places in which we work. To keep pace with this important shift in responsibility each of us should master important new health and fitness skills. We should keep ourselves updated on the latest discoveries about fitness, nutrition, stress, lifestyles, weight management, diseases and other self-care priorities. When we choose to work with health professionals, we must do so as health-active consumers, not as passive patients. According to the present day trends, fast moving personnel and social characters have been caught to industrialisation, westernisation, and to urbanisation with globalisation, 'IT solutions', fast food culture' and sedentary lifestyles, in Sri Lanka resulting an explosion in chronic incapacitating diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart diseases. Recent researches show that hospitalisation trends and waiting lists for by-pass surgeries have increased by considerable amount. Increase in ischemic heart diseases and hypertensive diseases, during the last 24 years and death rates from these diseases have increased by 300% in this period and heart diseases are now the main cause of death among adult males. Hyperlipidemia/hypercholesterolemia (elevated blood fats, especially, cholesterol) and sedentary lifestyles are key risk factors for CVD. Other factors that contribute to the risk are cigarette smoking, hypertension, poorly controlled diabetes, excessive and prolonged stress coupled with a pessimistic or antagonistic attitude, obesity, family history, and gender (male gender age 35 and females after menopause). It is very clear that the famous norm 'Healthy mind in a healthy body' is becoming difficult to achieve with the ongoing trend.
