Deputy Speaker: TNA to abstain by S. Selvakumar The Tamil National Alliance of 22 Parliamentarians will abstain from voting when Parliament meets on Tuesday to elect a deputy speaker though the party's Parliament group leader Joseph Pararajasingham said that a final decision would be made on Tuesday morning. The United National Front will meet on Monday to decide on their candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker, Colombo District Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake said. According to Tamil National Alliance sources the LTTE will be contacted before a decision is taken and as a gratitude to the government for expediting the peace process the Tamil party will abstain from voting thus paving the way for the government to elect its nominee. United People's Freedom Alliance Secretary and Minister Susil Premajayantha said that a decision would be made on Monday about the government's nominee for the post of Deputy Speaker. Earlier there was speculation that MEP leader Dinesh Gunawardene will be government's nominee but when contacted he said to contact the Leader of the House Maithripala Sirisena or the Prime Minister to find out the government's nominee. |
