Annan condemns Israeli destruction of Gaza homes UNITED NATIONS, May 14 (Reuters) Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Friday strongly condemned Israel's widespread destruction of homes along a Gaza-Egypt border corridor and said it violated international law. Officials at the Rafaj refugee camp estimated that 80 houses had been demolished since an attack by militants on an army carrier on Wednesday. Witnesses said hundreds of Palestinians fled after army bulldozers began knocking down their houses and stores. Annan said reports cited the demolition "of scores of buildings" in the last few days in addition to 130 residential buildings destroyed earlier this month. "The Secretary-General has repeatedly called on the Government of Israel to address its security needs within the boundaries of international law," said a statement issued by U.N. spokesman Fred Eckhard. "He urges Israel to uphold its obligations as an occupying power by immediately halting such actions, which are tantamount to collective punishment and a clear violation of international law," Eckhard said. |
