Women & Media Collective against "vicious media campaigns" Women and Media Collective, an organisation involved in media activities with regard to women, has strongly protested against the recent media coverage of an alleged relationship between Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauf Hakeem and Ms. Kumari Cooray. With a signature campaign of 41 women activists, Women and Media Collective in a statement has appealed to the relevant authorities to institute proceedings against the various newspapers, radio and television channels that have been involved in the coverage. The statement is as follows: "As women, we have been forced to watch another woman being publicly subjected to the worst forms of humiliation and victimisation, reinforcing all the negative stereotypes of women that we have tried hard to challenge and erase through our work. "Whether or not what Ms. Cooray has said on this or that occasion is true is irrelevant in terms of our concerns. Under no circumstances should any woman or man be subjected to this type of public exposure of her/ his personal travails in particular, at public expense. Especially heinous is the fact that this so-called 'expose' has been orchestrated entirely with narrow political gains in mind. "This situation once more makes it clear that the creation, implementation and enforcement of guidelines for the protection of all citizens of this country from this type of unethical and abusive journalism is absolutely critical. 'We call on the authorities to make immediate steps to institute proceedings against the various newspapers, radio and television channels that have been involved in this campaign. "We call on the public to express their protest in whatever ways available against the use of the media to carry out vicious campaigns of this nature." |
