Madras - Colombo Regatta on June 26 by Leslie Fernando The prestigious annual Madras-Colombo Regatta, the second oldest boat race in the world (the famous Oxford-Cambridge Regatta being the oldest) will be held on June 26 at the Adayar River, Chennai, Madras. The event is conducted by the Madras Boat Club. This year is the 103rd Regatta, with Madras 58 wins and CRC 54 wins. The Oxford-Cambridge race was 103 years last year. The Colombo Rowing Club has accepted the invitation to participate at this annual Regatta said Diluk Aluvihare the captain of the Colombo Rowing Club. Aluvihare, a national oarsman added that altogether 16 will row-12 oarsmen and 4 oarswomen. The rowers are now training under Lakmal Wickremage the national coach and CRC coach. The Colombo Rowing Club beat Madras Boat Club in the 2003 regatta, winning the main event too the Boat Race ('A' Fours) held in Colombo in the last week in June. The 12 oarsmen will participate in the 'A' Fours, 'B' Fours, 'A' Pairs, 'B' Pairs, 'A' Sculls and 'B' Sculls. The 4 oarswomen will participate in three events Pairs, Sculls, Fours. Aluvihare said that rowers are in fine form, after their good showing at the recently concluded South Asian Federation Games held in Islamabad, Pakistan. The Colombo Rowing Club rowers will make every effort to retain the title. Closing Regatta The Closing Regatta organised by the Colombo Rowing Club will be held on June 12 at the Beira Lake commencing at 2.30 p.m. According to Aluvihare, the usual events will be worked off and rowers from all leading clubs are expected to participate. Entries close with the Club Captain, Colombo Rowing Club on June 5. |
