Five projects earmarked to raise standards in swimming by Leslie Fernando Talent at grass roots level is expected to take swimming to a high level thus Outstation Swimming Development Programme drive to raise the standard of swimming by the National Amateur Aquatic Sports Union of Sri Lanka (NAASU) will be headed by DIG Sirisena Herath, a great swimming promoter in the Central Province a few years ago. The NAASU executive committee which met recently decided on five new projects to be implemented in a bid to raise the standard of swimming and coaching. The important aspect discussed at length was the development of swimming in the outstations and it was decided to go round the schools and promote the sports, hold swimming coaching classes and camps to find hidden talent. The Outstation Swimming Development Programme is now totally defunct and DIG Sirisena Herath who took a lot of interest for swimming while he was in the Central Province, was unanimously appointed to the post. C. Vijitha Fernando, the media spokesman for NAASU said that the other four projects discussed and approved were also important: Coaches clinic and camp under American Swimming coach Guy Edison. Aquatic Centre to permanently function at the University of Peradeniya swimming complex. The Colombo Municipal Council Swimming Pool and Centre at Mayfield Lane, Kotahena to be the permanent headquarters of NAASU - (to be discussed with CMC authorities and the Sports Ministry). To find a suitable swimming pool for selected swimmers to train as the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool will not be available until renovations are completed. |
