Points system scrapped for inter-school cricket by Ranjan Anandappa The present points system for first innings wins will be scrapped and school cricket will be played as friendly matches as in the past to uplift the standard of the cricket in the Island. This comes into operation in the 2004 - 2005 season. Discussions are on between the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association and Sri Lanka Cricket for this purpose as the present point system had seen a steady decline in the game since introducing the points system which lays emphasis to the school rather than the player. School cricket played in the past as 'friendliest' have been more beneficial for cricket overall and result oriented ones rather than the present points system which has driven away the crowds. During the era where school cricket was played as friendly matches starting at 12 noon with a 'milk' interval in-between prior to the country gaining full Test status has produced many great cricketers. During that era there was a plethora of fast bowlers, spinners and top allround cricketers which laid the foundation for Sri Lanka gaining Test status. The present system has failed to produce the same class of cricketers, besides a few who could be bracketted in the same class of yesteryear. However, the popular 'Lemonade' limited overs cricket tournament will be played as a separate one and will not have any bearing to the friendly matches. |
