Peace Cola launched on crest of a wave

by Elmo Leonard

A Malaysian produced cola beverage called Peace Cola, was launched in the Sri Lankan market last week. Retail priced at Rs 50 per 325 millilitre can, the product will initially be available at supermarket chains, tourist hotels, casinos, pubs, to the armed forces and prestigious outlets.

The initial Sri Lankan market will be surveyed, thereafter, a bottling plant will be set up here, intended to sell the product in India and other Indian Ocean Rim countries, the media were told.

Peace Cola is claimed to be suited to people in any state of health, while containing essential minerals and is said to be suitable to facilitate the metabolism of the body. The product is also claimed to be developed in accordance with WHO guidelines and to conform to EEC standards. The cola is also suited as a 'chaser', according to the manufacturers. The local distributor is Sa-Sase Traders (Pvt) Ltd, Pannipitiya.

The manufacturers, Peace Cola Sdn Bhd, Malaysia, will in the future carry out campaigns to sponsor sports events in Sri Lanka, its founder president and CEO, Thayalan Nathan said. In time, four other products will be introduced, director of the Malaysian company, marketing manager, Shehan Danthanarayana said.

Peace Cola went into initial production in May 2003. It is currently available in Malaysia and 21 countries in the Middle East, Devraj, director of the Malaysian company said. The product is meant to play a role as a global peace ambassador, for a world longing for peace. The product is a private sector initiative in answer to the Malaysian governments commitment to a peaceful world.

For every sale of Peace Cola, the company says that it sets aside 5 percent of sales turnover towards a Peace Cola Foundation. The funds would be used to assist victims of war and natural disasters.
