South China signs agreement with SL Southern Province

Governor Wei Lincheng of the Hainan Province, which is the Southern Province of the People's Republic of China, signed the agreement with Governor Kingsley T. Wickremaratne of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka.

The two sides agreed to make concerted efforts on the basis of equality and mutual benefits to promote people-to-people friendly contacts and economic and trade inflows between the two sides, and actively carry out exchanges and cooperation in the field of tourism, culture, education, agriculture, communication technology and others. They also agreed to establish a sisterhood relationship with the Hainan University of the P. R. China and the Ruhunu University of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The signing ceremony took place at the Baoa Sofitel Hotel in the picturesque tourist city of Boao during the Annual Conference 2004 of the Asian Economic Forum.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, in her message to Fidel V. Ramos, the former President of the Philippines who is the Chairman of the BFA, said: "I am very happy to learn the Governors of the Hainan Province of P. R. China and the Southern Province of Sri Lanka will be signing an agreement to enhance economic and cultural cooperation between the two provinces".

Hu Jinto, President of the People's Republic of China, who was the Chief Guest at the Annual Conference 2004 of BFA, extended his best wishes to both the Governors Kingsley T. Wickremaratne and Wei Lincheng and said that Sri Lanka and China are old friends and that economic and cultural cooperation between the two provinces would cement the friendship between China and Sri Lanka for generations to come.President Hu Jinto requested Governor Wickremaratne to convey his heartfelt greetings and best wishes to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and her newly elected government.
