Certificate in Aviation Engineering

by Prasad Gunewardene

This is a rare opportunity for young students who have qualified in their G.C.E. Advanced Level. Even those who have passed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level are now absorbed. The course is "Certificate IV in Aviation Engineering that makes you an Aircraft Engineer (Mechanical/Maintenance).

The first course offered by the Asian Aviation Centre (Pvt) Limited located at the Ratmalana Airport, the Premier Aeronautical Engineering and Flying Academy in Sri Lanka has given the opportunity to four Sri Lankan students at this Centre and an Indian to gain employment in the Maldives.

They followed the Certificate in engineering (Mechanical) that covered two years both in theory and practicals and were successful in gaining employment as Aircraft Technicians at Maldivian Air Taxi for a monthly salary of US dollars 650 with free food and accommodation plus an overtime rate of three US dollars per hour. These young men are Pasan Biyanwila, M.S.P. Alwis, Irosh Liyanage and Imal Tennekoon of Sri Lanka and Y.K. Shukla of India.

The Centre which operates with the blessings of the Civil Aviation authorities since 1985 has expanded rapidly in the offer of courses pertaining to aeronautical spheres. It is affiliated to Kingston University in the United Kingdom and the Regency Institute of TAFE, South Australia.

According to Dhananjaya Weerasinghe, Director of the Centre, students who complete the two year course are free to proceed to Australia for the next Diploma. "Our training is extensive and the Maldivians who interviewed our students were satisfied to offer them employment", he added.

Weerasinghe said that the students are trained in the use of the latest sophisticated equipment to familiarise themselves with the latest technologies. He said that these trainees also had opportunities in the Sri Lankan national carrier and many opted to join it under various categories they have qualified in.
