CH sweeping 36/11 win over Army by Lal Gunesekera CH & FC registered their fifth consecutive victory in the current Caltex 'A' division League Rugby Championship to remain unbeaten with a sweeping 36 points (4 goals, 1 try, 1 penalty) to 11 (1 try, 2 penalties) win over Army in their first-round game at Maitland Crescent yesterday. CH led 12-8 at half time. Though winning, CH, could have scored more tries if their ball handling was good. But they failed and had to be satisfied with only five tries. They settled down later, but it was the forwards, who stole the day. Army started the season with a "bang" when they won the first four games, but last week, they lost badly to CR and now CH, and I wonder where they have gone wrong with their superior fitness. After Army's T. A. Silva fluffed a simple 22-metre penalty in the fifth minute, CH, went ahead five minutes later through No. 8 Noa Nawaqarua who scored unopposed and with Nalin Dissanayake making certain of the conversion, CH, led 7-0. In the 28th minute, Army reduced the lead through an uncomested try by left winger Lankatilleke off a move initiated by centre Edwin Shimanga the Kenyan (Army 5-7). Four minutes later, Army, pulled ahead with a T. A. Silva penalty from 35 metres (8-7), but four minutes before "lemons", CH took the lead again through a powerful run by Fijian centre Jim Bolakaro, but Nalin Dissanayake failed with the conversion (CH 12-8). CH scored three more tries after the "turn around", but the scores were not seen. The reason being, the print media were pushed into the right corner of the pavilion, and the pressmen were unable to see the proceedings of 3/4 of the playing area due to a big lorry and two high platforms erected for the TV personnel. Do the CH authorities want newspaper coverage of their matches or not? If they do want the matches 'covered' their should be a better views for pressmen. The tries for CH were scored in the third, 19th and 39th minutes of the second session with Nalin Dissanayake obliging with every conversion and also a penalty in the 34th minute. Army scored through a penalty by T. A. Silva in the eighth minute. Dilroy Fernando refereed. |
