Reigning national men's champion Niluka Karunaratne, who is in the world rankings, and one of the top women's shuttlers, Thilini Jayasinghe, will be Sri Lanka's two competitors. Niluka Karunaratne has also been picked to compete at the Malaysian Open Championship, which is another IBF event for world ranking purposes, in Kuala Lumpur late June. The SLBA will also send leading players for the Indian and Pakistani Satellites tourneys scheduled for October-November. The South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC) Badminton Championship is scheduled to be held in India in March next year (2005), while the South Asian Badminton Federation Championship too is down to be staged in December this year, but the venue has not yet been finalised. Meanwhile, the national pool training of both the men and women will commence from June 1 under Kingsley Nallathamby, a former national champions and Thomas Cup player. Sri Lanka's shuttlers who fared exceptionally well at the recent SAF Games in Pakistan were felicitated by the SLBA last Friday (May 28) at its headquarters at Maitland Place. |
