Meditation the newest in skin care

by Lakmal Welabada

Nuzly Sikkander

'Handling beauty with a heart' is Nuzly Sikkander's slogan. The new (sort of) kid in the cosmetic care scene, feels that kindness - the kind that melts the heart, should be the essence of any good beatuy care activity. "Just applying various creams and massaging the skin won't give effective results, unless you do it with real care that comes from your heart," she says in all seriousness.

Nuzly who is in her early twenties started her salon at Castle Lane, Bambalapitiya just a year ago. Born in Sri Lanka, she lived in the US for nearly twenty years, and has trained herself to see the world with a broader vision. "Most of the time I give in, as I believe it avoids troubles and gives peace of mind. It brings quick results," she says.

Nuzly became a cosmetologist after following a three-year Diploma course at Liaschorr Cosmetic Skin Care School in New York. "It was my dream," she smiles reminiscing how she used to put make-up on her little cousins and friends in their play house. Little Nuzly was often seen in front of her mother's dressing table trying out Mama's make up. Hence, make-up cases, make-up sets and tiny mirrors in various shapes were always among her birthday and festival gifts.

Her parents, who recognised her fascination for beauty culture backed her decision to enter Liaschorr. "We had to complete 1200 hours at school, and then work there to get practical experience. I specialised in skin care," she says.

Treating acne and pigmentation are the two main areas Nuzly specialises in. "There are two treatment procedures for acne. I start with the 'basic-normal treatment', and if it does not answer, the client is put on the 'intense acne treatment programme.' Creams and galvanic current are used as part of the treatment. But, the client has to follow treatment at home as well," says the young cosmetologist.

Apart from fatty foods, sweets and dandruff, Nuzly attributes depression and stress as reasons for acne that cause heavy damage not only to the face but also to the body. "If I don't see any improvement from the acne treatment, then I try to persuade my client to concentrate more on relaxing and developing a peaceful mind. And that is something I have experienced too.

Meditation is the most effective remedy for a lot of illnesses she says, explaining that she meditates concentrating on breathing in and exhaling. "I do it in bed every night until I fall asleep. Also it can be when I feel tired. I use the time in between clients to meditate. That ten to fifteen minutes really helps me refresh myself to continue with work with other clients," says Nuzly.

As she prefers a slim, healthy body, Nuzly has had to cut down on two of her favourite 'C's - cheese and chocolate. In addition to that the figure conscious young beautician also does a lot of walking and swimming as part of her routine. "Swimming activates every muscle in your body, and burns extra calories," she says.

Nuzly is married to Dr. Fairoos, who works at Apollo Hospital, Colombo. "Though I entered wedlock at a very young age it has not restrained me from developing my career as my husband is very supportive and understanding," she says with a smile.

Nuzly loves to travel. She likes to see interesting places in Sri Lanka, which she had missed, as she and her family left the country when she was a baby.

Talking about her future plans, Nuzly says that she wants to expand her business further. "However, it will be customised to each person. I don't believe in having so many clients in one room. Hence each client will be attended to individually in separate apartments in my salon. At present, of course, I can accommodate only one client at a time," she says.

Other than normal and relaxing facials, Nuzly also does bacial (back treatment), head and shoulder massages, fairness treatments and handcial (hand treatment) at her 'Derma Care' salon.

As a young married woman entrepreneur Nuzly has a brief yet important message to share with other youth. "Think twice before doing something," she advices.
