Sri Lanka's junior girls excel in Malaysia Up-and-coming duo Dinali de Silva of Bishop's College and Druvinka Moraes of St.Bridget's Convent combined well to beat Kelly Leow and Grace Pang the u14 doubles pair from Singapore 7-5, 6-1 to reach the final at the MPPJ Milo Junior Tennis Open at the Petaling Jaya Municipal Sports Complex in Kelana Jaya, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia held from June 8 to 12. Rising to the final in the doubles, was an unique occasion for the duo from Sri Lanka as they made history by playing the opening game on the newly constructed grand stand tennis court against the top seeded u14 girl's doubles pair from Malaysia. "Coming to the final was definitely rewarding as it was our first international competition. The real challenge was to play hard courts at 35-40 degrees temperature conditions", said Sri Lanka's u14 girl's duo. Dinali de Silva also dominated play to reach the quarter finals in the girls open singles u14 category, beating Wai Tan from Malaysia 6-2, 6-0 and outplayed 4th seed Sabrina Gill from Kuala Lampur 6-4, 7-5 in the singles quarter-finals to earn her place for the semi-finals against 2nd Seed Neesha T. from Malaysia. Druvinka Moraes clinched her place beating Tiffany Loh from Singapore 6-1, 6-1 and met the number I seed at the quarter-finals of the girls open singles u14 category. Amritha Muttai from Holy Family Convent clinched the u12 doubles championship partnering Malaysia's u12 3rd seed and received a silver in the final of girl's open singles u12 category at the MPPJ Milo Junior Tennis Open Championship 2004. |
