Mobitel reaching all corners of the globe Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd (MPL) a fully- owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom launched ACeS Satellite service to improve global contactability even to the remotest corners of the world. The use of satellite services has resulted in the provision of telephony services to communities where it was not feasible to provide fixed line or cellular phone services economically, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lalith De Silva said. "With our strong commitment to providing telephone services to under-served and under-developed areas, we searched for solutions that would enable Mobitel to provide services to even the remotest parts of Sri Lanka," he said . De Silva said that the Satellite service provided by ACes, which has created a niche in providing rural telephony at an affordable price in Indonesia and the Philippines , was the best suited keeping these goals in mind. MPL was in talks with the government to offer satellite- based services at fixed- line rates to the proposed regional tele- centres and further bring down the cost of satellite- based- fixed phone services to land line rates to increase the telephone penetration in Sri Lanka in keeping with the government's vision, he said. ACeS International CEO Adi Rahman Adiwosa said that they are proud to be associated with Mobitel in bringing to Sri Lanka the fastest growing mobile satellite service in Asia. He said that by making leading edge satellite technology affordable, ACes has already contributions to rural economies in many parts of Asia, which will also benefit the rural masses in Sri Lanka. ACeS (Asia Cellular Satellite) is an Asia Regional Satellite Communication company launched in early 2001. ACeS have has expanded its services throughout the Asian region at affordable prices.
