Employers' Federation on Corporate Responsibility

The Employers' Federation of Ceylon (EFC) will conduct a Symposium themed "Corporate Social Responsibility" (CSR) to coincide with its 75th Anniversary.

It is held in collaboration with Emsolve Consultants (Pvt) Ltd and sponsored by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The International Organization of Employers, of which the EFC is a member, has identified CSR as being "by far the most dynamic international issue for business in the coming years". The International Organization for Standardization holds a conference on CSR this year at which a decision will be taken on whether an ISO Standard on this subject is to be drawn up.

It is currently generating substantial interest in Sri Lanka and warrants in-depth review and many clarifications, both with a view to removing misunderstandings and formulating possible practical steps to enhance commitment to CSR.

The proposed Symposium will address the above issues and also discuss the possible role of the EFC in this area. As the only Employer Organization with a primary focus on employment and social issues, the EFC attaches high priority to this subject. The background material for the Symposium will comprise of a book commissioned by the EFC and authored by Messrs Sriyan de Silva and Franklyn Amerasinghe of Emsolve Consultants (Pvt) Ltd titled - "Corporate Social Responsibility : Issues, Problems and Challenges".

Another source document will be Sriyan de Silva's book on - "The Globalization Debate : Setting the Record Straight". Both books will be available to participants at the Symposium. The book on CSR addresses both concepts and practical issues from an international and national perspective and includes numerous Sri Lanka case studies on the subject.

The Symposium will be inaugurated by the Minister of Labour Relations and Foreign Employment___. The keynote address will be made by Dr A T Ariyaratne of "Sarvodaya". ILO specialists, experts on a variety of subjects connected with CSR are also due to make presentations and be panelists. In addition, case studies pertaining to CSR activities by Sri Lankan Companies will also be presented.
