Deepal's career change brings success

Honesty, quick decision- making and determination are the pillars of success for Managing Director CEO of Delvon Computers (pvt) Ltd and Delvon Security and Investigations (pvt) Ltd Lt., Col Deepal Subasingha.

He was born in Colombo to a family of three children, two boys and one girl. Subasingha's father worked at the Car Mart while his mother was a housewife.

"My dream from small days was to join the Army, and I did everything to achieve that, "said Subasingha. He had his education at Nalanda Vidyalaya and soon after his Advanced Level examination he joined the Army." I joined the intake 13 and we were 32 cadets in the batch. Once we completed the two year course we were attached to the Rajarata Rifles. The Wijayaba Infantry was amalgamated with Gajaba regiment on October 16 1983 under Wijaya Wimalaratna. I served as a Platoon Commander and recruit instructor till I was transferred to the Infantry Training School at Minneriya as a staff officer.

Thereafter there was no turning back and he was promoted to the rank of Captain and Major within a few years. During operation Wadamarachchi he was one of the pioneers who did the initial breakout. He had served in Jaffna, Point pedro, Palalay, Thondamanaru and Velvetithurai in the rank of captain.

"In 1987 end when the fourth batallion of the regiment was formed we were transferred to Trincomalee." In 1989 he was posted to Kurunegala and promoted as a Major. During this time he also served at the Diyatalawa Miltary Academy as an officer instructor and Adjucator for two years.

In 1992 Subasingha was asked to form a batallion which was a difficult task. As a batallion commander the 9th batallion of the Gajaba regiment was formed on March 8, 1993 in Kayts. He commanded it for three years before he was transferred to Colombo." It was the first time since I joined the Army that I was sent to Colombo." During this time the ANCL was attacked and he was one of the pioneers who saved the ANCL, its staff and the valuable machinery and documents.

He was promoted as the Brigade commander of the two two brigade and coordinating officer Trincomalee North and once he completed twenty years he wanted to leave the Army and start something on his own.

" I knew I had the organising capability and therefore wanted to leave and do something on my own. I left the Army and started an IT company on January 6 2000 with three people." I knew nothing about computers until I formed the company but I learnt it quickly and started off by selling computers and printers. For the month of December alone I earned a turnover of Rs 18 million.

At present the company is engaged in structured cabling system integration as well as developing of Local Area Networks(LAN) and Wide Area Networks(WAN) as well as software development. Incidently Delvon Compuer Systems is the only software validator in the region. The whole operation will be moving to Malaysia in the near future to validate software to comply with the Food and Drug Administration regulations in USA.

Delvon Security and Investigations employs all ex-serviceman and provide security to most of the leading companies and banks including Linea Aqua, Stretchline, Ansell, SAGT, Colombo Land, SSC and Sampath Bank.

" The companies have provided employment to about 1200, including 1000 guards and concentrate on training the staff to keep them abreast of the challenges," he said.

" I want to move into the field of Eco Tourism and also start a Non Governmental Organisation(NGO) for de-mining, said Subasingha revealing his future plans. (SG)
