Please resign! UNPers tell Ranil Several rebel Members of Parliament will demand UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to step down from the party's leadership honourably, former Provincial Councillor Almon Peiris said. Speaking to the Sunday Observer Peiris further added that if Wickremesinghe was reluctant to step down the rebels within the party were likely to join hands with the UPFA to bring peace and implement the 'Rata Perata' program to stabilise the economy. When asked for the reason for their agitation Peiris said that many UNP MPs feel that UNP leader is a born loser and he does not know at least how to protect the power given to him. He had lost 15 elections out of a total 17 elections so far. Rebel MPs are expected to propose Karu Jayasuriya to accept the leadership, otherwise one of them are prepared to accept it, he said. Meanwhile, former UNP stalwart Tyronne Fernando said that his call for people to abstain from voting at the last Provincial Council against the UNP leadership was successful. He said "considering all these factors it is up to the UNP leader to take a decision. Former Prime Ministers Sir John Kothalawala in 1956 and Dudley Senanayake in 1970 resigned honourably following election defeats. UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has organised his loyalists to take up the issue of removing Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara at tomorrow's group meeting to divert the attention of MPs who are planning to pressurise the leader to step down, Peiris further said. |
