YESL 2004 launched

The seventh National launch of Young Entrepreneurs Sri Lanka (YESL) 2004 was held at Musaeus College Colombo on July 18.

Director General National Institute of Education Prof. Jagath Wickremasinghe Chief Guest on the occasion said that he was convinced that YESL provided an excellent model which could be extended to all schools.

He said that he will recommend to the authorities to allow time within the curriculum for this program as it has proved very successful as demonstrated by the participating students from Colombo as well as the rural areas.

Prof. Wickremasinghe said that during his school days there was so much teaching in schools and universities but very little room for learning but this program through entrepreneurship trains children in all aspects of problem solving, team work, decision making, planning and accomplishing their tasks by matching education to workplace experiences.

While complimenting Patrick Amarasinghe and others for introducing the program to schools in the country, Prof. Wickremasinghe promised to facilitate more and better support from the education sector for the program.

John Varley, Project Director The Competitiveness Initiative Guest of Honour said that entrepreneurship makes better citizens, self descipline, good governance and to know how to interact with people. He congratulated the students on their achivements.

Patrick Amarasinghe - President, YESL said that the aim of the program is to provide young Sri Lankan citizens with practical economic programs and experience in the private enterprise system through a partnership with the business and education communities.

The program was launched in 1998 with the participation of 1000 children from eight schools and today it is spread over 300 schools involving more than 30,000 children. But the program has not developed to the extent we would have liked it to due to several constraints.

We would need the support of the government to develop this program since our children can compete and beat anybody in the world, he added.
