Mobitel launches another revolutionary service

by Hiran H.Senewiratne

Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd (MPL) a fully owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom launched yet another revolutionary service for their pre-paid card, aiming at low income subscribers.

This new service,"MORE Top Up" will benefit the Mobitel pre-paid subscribers, where 65 per cent of mobiles in the country are pre-paid connections, its CEO Lalith de Silva said. He said that this is perceived as a system to economize the usage and keep track of expenditure and introduce MORE Top Up state- of- the- art SMS solutions. This card also gives value added services, MMS and GPRS, to pre-paid package holders, which upto now was only available on post paid, the CEO said.

"We are committed to deliver products and services, which provide tangible benefits to mobile users in line with our simple and amazing tagline,"de Silva said.Customers can now re- charge their pre paid accounts through MORE Top Up from dealers of SMS, he said.De Silva said that the way this can be done is simple and two pronged ie- when a MORE card holder wants to recharge a prepaid account, the dealer can do so by transferring the required rupee amounts to the customer through SMS using the Mobitel SIM menu.

The other method is to transfer part of the rupee value from existing account to another account through the same Mobitel menu using SMS,he said.

He also explained that through the use of this solution a new segment of low income subscribers would be able to access telephone services in line with the vision of the government of Sri Lanka. He said that "because of card production and distribution costs it is not feasible to produce a pre paid card with a value less than Rs 100. With this solution a subscriber could opt to get a credit of Rs 50 that would translate to a two minute IDD call.

Any Mobitel subscriber could instantly become a pre paid card dealer increasing the micro employment opportunities of the people in the country in line with the networks social objective of using technology to build a better lifestyle for Sri Lankans. According to the MPL General Manager (Information Systems), this solution is only the beginning in the use of SMS to carry out financial transactions in the future.

This will also introduce services such as Corporate solutions to enable companies to top up the employees pre paid account and charging their existing post paid account on full post paid to pre paid and pre paid to post paid convergence.MPL is the only indigenous mobile services provider in Sri Lanka with a subscriber base of more than 230,000.
