Showcasing sauce boats and sugar bowls by Indira Dahanayake
An exhibition of Contemporary British Kitchenware is currently held at the Barefoot Art Gallery, Colombo 3. The exhibition is sponsored by the British Council. Out of the 24 young artists, majority of them are British nationals. The works of these artists display some of the past and the present day kitchenware. The materials used for the exhibits vary from porcelain to earthenware, glass and a combinations of metal and plastic. The tiny sauce boats made of crispy white porcelain and the jugs add a touch of cleanliness all round to any kitchen sans its age. "The cut bowl in bone china with a fish engraved on the outside gives a 'new' look to the old", said Ranmali Mirchandani (arts manager) one of the organisers of the exhibition. The feather quilt and silver bowl is another eye catching design by the young artists - Dai Ries Rees born in 1961 holds a masters degree in Ceramics and Glass from The Royal College of Art, London. Another eye-catching exhibit was the radiator toast rack designed by Collin Sanders, a young artist who believes in sustenance. 'Folding Cutlery Set' designed by William Warren who knows the advantages of saving space in a kitchen, and also printed dusters in vibrant colours and designs ideally suited for the kitchen surroundings add much colour to the background. The exhibition titled 'Everything But....' (the Kitchen Sink) will go on till the end of the month at Barefoot Gallery. |
