Amarasekera wins, but bids adieu to Athens

Sri Lanka's Prasanna Amarasekera narrowly missed qualifying for the Athens Olympic Games failing by. 05 seconds in the 200 metres at the 82nd National Athletic Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Amarasekera timed 20.80 secs. The set standard timing for Olympics is 20.75 secs. Ruwan Pradeep Perera of Sri Lanka Army retained the pole vault event clearing a height of 4.44 metres. Meanwhile, T. Alailima of Lanka Lions also retained the national tile in the men's discus throw with a distance of 48.62 metres.

Other fancied athletes chalked up victories in the other events.

The meet will be continued today with 20 km race walk for men at 6.30 am 16 other events to be worked off from 3.00 p.m.
