Lankan netballers swamp India 99-14

by Leslie Fernando

Perfect co-ordination and swift, intelligent play saw Sri Lanka completely outclass India by 99 goals to 14 in the opening match of the Asian Youth Netball Championships conducted by the Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday.

Defending champions Sri Lanka led in all four quarters 23-5, 18-5, 31-0 and 27-4. The host country's bid to retain the title for the third in a row having won in 1998 and 2002, got off to an auspicious first quarter win by 23 goals to 5 as India stagnated.

The score kept mounting so rapidly as crack goal shoot Iresha Koralagodage and goal attack Sanduni Bollagala slipped in goal after goal to increase the second quarter score to 41 goals to 10 (18-5).

In the third quarter Sri Lankan skipper and top shooter Gishanthi Jayakody, who was rested in the first and second quarters, replaced Iresha Bollagala in the goal shoot position and showed her perfect shooting skills as Sri Lanka did not concede a single goal. Sri Lanka added 31 goals to make it 72-10.

The fourth quarter saw Sri Lanka increasing the tally to 99 goals to 14 (27-4) in this one-sided affair.

Nadeesha de Silva (centre) Shani Nisansala (goal keeper), Gishanthi Jayakody (shooter 49), Iresha Koralagodage (shooter 28) and Sanduni Bollagala (goal attack 22) were outstanding.
