CH 'thunder' CR 10-3

by Lal Gunesekera

CR & FC's chances of regaining the Caltex League 'A' Division Rugby title look rather slim now. Yesterday, at Maitland Crescent, CH & FC triumphed over the red shirts by 10 points (2 tries) to 3 (1 penalty) after leading 10-0 at half time in their 'return' game. CR had a smashing 32-5 win over CH in the first-round at Longden Place.

It looked as if CH's strategy was to soften up their opponents. If this was so, then they succeeded, but the way they went about it was disappointing. CH's players went for the man instead of the ball which resulted in three of their players, all overseas recruits (Jim Bolokoro, Noa Nawaqarua and Kinijoji Rakata) being send to the 'Sin Bin', while Bolokoro, who was penalised for the second time in the fifth minute of the second session, was ordered out of the field.

They were 'booked' for dangerous play. CR's Western Samoan centre Kirisome Legenaitaga was the first target in the second minute of play, and had to be carried away on a stretcher, but later returned to the field. Then CR's scrum-half Zulki Hamid too was carried out on a stretcher in the 12th minute and he took no further part in the game having being concussed and suffering a head injury too. CR's Tongan player Joshua Kala too was sent into "Sin Bin" With another.

Also, a handful of supporters of the home team spoilt the end result. They were under the influence of alcohol and throughout the game were shouting crued remarks at opposition players. This is the type of behaviour that leads to fisty cuffs, but it was strange that CH's top officials never thought it fit to put an end to this arranges. Another disappointing factor witnessed was CH's coach Graham Raux arguing with the referee Aruna Jayasekera after Bolokoro was ordered out of the field which led to the referee even appealing to the Match Commissioner Ana Wijeratne.

CH scored their first try through Saranga Jayakoddy in the 23rd minute. He put the finishing touches to a move originating from a five-metre short tap from the left flank. Seven minutes later they scored again. This time Ranaweera barged through off a line-out five metres away also on the left flank. Both tries went unconverted.

CR were swarming all over CH territory in the second session and brought in several replacements too. But it was not just their day with only Halimdeen firing across a simple 25 metre penalty in the eighth minute.
