Eight national swimmers for Schools' Meet by Leslie Fernando Eight national swimmers 3 boys and 6 girls have been included in the long list of 95 swimmers to represent Sri Lanka Schools' at the swim meet with Tamil Nadu hosted and organised by the Sri Lanka Schools' Aquatic Sports Association to be held on August 7 and 8 at the S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia pool. The Age Group Swimming meet is being held for the third successive year. Last year it was held in Chennai and the inaugural meet was at the Thomian pool in 2002. Sri Lanka Schools won the overall title on both occasions. The national swimmers are - Dharshaka Tennakoon (Lyceum International School), Milinda Wickremasinghe and Nilmin Arsecularatne (both St. Joseph's College), Miniruwani Samarakoon (Gateway International School, Kandy), Sisters Uma Kavya and Prabha Madhavi Dharmadasa (both of Musaeus College), Mihirikandanarachchi (Mahamaya College, Kandy), Chathuri Abeykoon (Ladies College) and Piumi Ekanayake (SBBV). Dharshana Tennakoon and Chathuri Abeykoon are expected to be the boys and girls overall captains. The squad was, selected after several trials held recently. Those picked should confirm their respective events on before August 25 to the organisers, said Mrs. Ranjani de Fonseka, Secretary, Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association (SLSASA). The meet includes 60 individual events and freestyle and medley relays. The relays teams will be selected on the basis of individual events performances. The six age categories are under-8, under-10, under-12, under-14, under-16, under-18 and open for both boys and girls. The Dr. S. Kailasam Challenge Trophy is up for grabs. Meanwhile, separate trophies will also be on offer for the boys and girls overall winners. |
