Its Royal 8 - 5 over Isipathana by Ranjan Anandappa Royal had to fight tooth and nail to maintain their impressive run this season to retain the Major Milroy Fernando Challenge Trophy for the 5th successive year with an unimpressive win over Isipatana by 8 points (try, penalty) to 5 - (try) in their Inter-School rugby match played at Longden Place yesterday. Royal led 3-0 at the breather. Royal were stretched to the maximum by a determined Isipathana outfit which went down fighting due to lack of a reliable place kicker. Isipathana trailing 5-8, missed two easy penalties and a coversion under the post by Lasintha Costa while Royal's reliable place kicker Bahudeen too missed a conversion. The match was scrappy at the begining, but both sides broke the ice with some sparodic moves which could not be converted into points due to lack of co-ordination. Royal mainly played with their forwards and kept their impressive back division starved of possession. Royal crossed the opponents line early in the second half through a push over try by Number Bimal Herath which went unconverted. Isipathana soon reduced the defecit when winger Hashan Costa picked up a loose ball and touched down under the post ,but Lasintha Costa missed the easy conversion under the post. Orville Fernando refereed. Kingswood kings in the hills - drub Thomians 20-0 by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy Sports Corr Kingswood College, Kandy made certain of winning the Group 'A' Singer Trophy schools rugby championship when they beat S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia by 20 points (1 goal, 2 tries, 1 drop goal) to nil at the Bogambara Stadium yesterday. At half-time Kingswoodians led 5-0. Kingswoodians started on a brisk note and they were awarded two penalties from kicking range within the first ten minutes of play, but they were fluffed by full back Erande Weerakoddy who made amends for their lapses later in the game. Kingswoodians had to wait till the 25th minute of play to draw first blood when their three quarters moved the ball sweetly and winger Thilina Manoj had a fairly free passage barging through the Thomian winger to touch down far left. It went unconverted. Kingswoodians, who enjoyed a 5-0 lead at lemons, were off to a good start in the second half when they piled up 10 points within the first 5 minutes of play, which upset the Thomians and they never fully recovered from this. An inside pass from fly half Fazil Marija saw full back Erande Weerakoddy execute an effortless drop goal from 35 metres out. Two minutes later a wayward pass by a Thomian three quarter was collected by fly half Fazil Marija who sliced the opponents defence to score by the right post and Erande Weerakoddy added the extra points to give the Kingswoodians a 15-0 lead. Full back Weerakoddy collected the ball in a flash off a maul to sprint and plant a brilliant try but failed to add the extra points. Referee: Chaminda Amadoru. Kingsood won the under 13 game 10-0 and also the under 15 match 7-0. Carey go down fighting to Vidyartha by our Kandy Sports Correspondent Vidyartha College, Kandy beat Carey College, Colombo by 29 points (2 goals, 3 tries) to 17 (2 goals, 1 penalty) in their schools Singer Trophy rugby tournament played at Nittawela yesterday. At half time Vidyartha led 12-7. Vidyartha scored their tries through prop T. Thilakaratne *2), lock S. Wickremasinghe (1) centre R. Senaviratne (1) and winger T. Nishantha (1). Fly half Charith Senaviratne goalled two of the tries. For Carey lock Imran Lye (1) and flanker S. Senaviratne (1) scored. Both tries were goalled by full back M. Kamal who also put over the penalty.
