President proposes BIMST-EC infrastructure fund President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga addressing the first ever summit of BIMSTEC held in Bangkok, Thailand proposed to mobilize Asia bond market resources for an infrastructure development fund for the region, to be managed by the interested Central Banks on a commercial lending basis. She also proposed joint action to broaden the rules of origin criteria applied in GSP regimes to encompass both SAARC and ASEAN regions. She commended the signing of a Framework Agreement for a Free Trade Area among member countries of BIMSTEC. Emphasizing the need for equitable growth she told the Summit that growth without equity where its benefits do not reach the periphery will neither be meaningful nor sustainable. "We must ensure that the fruits of globalization and regional economic cooperation reach the village and every nook and corner of our countries," she added. BIMSTEC is an Economic Cooperation Group comprising Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. |
