JHU popularity wanes by Deepal Warnakulasuriya Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) Vice President Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera says the initial popularity of the JHU has waned and his party is facing difficulties. Denying speculation that there is a conflict between the lay office-bearers and the Bhikkus over posts, Rev. Sobhitha Thera, however, admitted that the JHU is vacating its present office at Narahenpita and will be moving to a new Head Office at Isipathana Mawatha, Havelock Town. Ven. Sobhitha in an exclusive interview with `The Sunday Observer' also pledged that they have come to an agreement not to help any party or movement to topple the government. He said that they would assist the government when necessary on any issue which brings benefits to the country. He stressed that what an Opposition must do is not to oppose everything brought by the ruling party in Parliament. Dr. Sobhitha Thera claimed that they would also brief their stance to the Opposition that they are not to oppose everything as the traditional opposition were to do. "JHU is a fully independent party and we would assist the government to continue for the country's benefit. It would not allow any conspiracy against the government by power hungry politicians to succeed," he added. He also said that JHU's pledge is not a secret they have given that assurance to the President earlier and to the Prime Minister and several other ministers recently. He also assured that their conduct and present situation in Parliament will persuade the government to work on needy projects and plans. He further said that any moves by anyone to topple the government will be in vain. |
