Arrangements finalised for Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka Schools' swim meet

All arrangements have been finalised to stage the third annual Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka Schools dual Age Group Swimming Championships hosted and organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association (SLSASA) to be held on August 7 and 8 at S. Thomas' College Swimming Pool, commencing at 8.00 a.m. on both days.

Over 100 swimmers will represent Tamil Nadu while Sri Lanka Schools has also selected a same number of swimmers. Tamil Nadu swimmers for the aquatic dual will be from Justice P. S. Kailasam Medical and Educational Research Foundation and they will arrive on Thursday," said Mrs. Ranjani Fonseka, Secretary of the SLSASA.

The swimmers will compete in under-8, under-10, under-12, under-14, under-16, under-18 and open both boys and girls. They will swim in 60 individual events and free style and medley relays.

The overall champions will be presented with the Dr. S. Kailasam Challenge Trophy. Bernards will provide T-shirts and Linea Aqua Subsidiary of Maas Holdings, the swim wear to the swimmers.

Sri Lanka has won the dual twice in 2002 and 2003 in Colombo and Chennai and they are expected to make it three-in-a-row. Mrs. Fonseka said that a simple opening ceremony will be held on Saturday around 7.30 a.m.

The closing ceremony and distribution of awards will be on Sunday at 5.00 p.m. Ms. Nirupam Rao, the Indian High Commissioner for Sri Lanka will be the chief guest. Dr. David Ponniah, Warden S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia and the President of the Sri Lanka Schools' Aquatic Sports Association will also grace the occasion.

At the closing ceremony the Bishop's College band will be in attendance, there will be a diving display by prominent divers coached by Mahinda Liyanage (NAASU Diving Controller). In addition a water ballet will be performed by St. Bridget's Convent.
